“Learn it young, remember it forever” . . .  a promotional slogan adopted by Scouts South Africa, as discussed and depicted in this video.

This slogan has real implications with regard to risk management in Scouting, reinforcing the fact that training and experience for the Scouts themselves is a significant aspect of ensuring that youthful participants in an outdoor activity have the necessary training and technical skills to operate in the contemplated environment, not to mention being a real partner in the risk management equation.

Particularly for those Scouts participating in high adventure or backcountry activities, learning the policies and procedures of Safe Swim Defense,  Safety Afloat,  Trek Safely, and Weather Hazards  training should be an integral part of their preparation for the activity. Not to mention being trained in CPR and first aid skills commensurate with the anticipated environment.

Part of the unit’s duty of care toward its Scouts is ensuring that they are prepared for the activity in which they are about to participate . . . they should be prepared to either avoid, or address, those risks they may encounter!

Learn it young, remember it forever!
